Position: Operations Director

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: President

FLSA Status: Exempt

The Operations Director is a key member of the Senior Leadership team and is responsible for ensuring company operations meet regulatory, customer and financial requirements in a timely and cost effective manner. The Operations Director is responsible for overall operations, including determining appropriate leadership team staffing, leadership development, capital expenditures, and continuous process improvement across multiple departments.



Demonstrate commitment to STLs Mission Statement, Core Values and Operating Principles

  • Develops overall company goals and strategies and communicates them to the Sr. Leadership team

  • Oversees the establishment of key performance measurements that align with overall company goals and focus on maintaining the highest standards of quality, customer satisfaction efficiency and regulatory compliance. Uses these measurements to monitor and manage performance

  • Actively participate in the system for continuous process improvement focused on customer requirements, quality and production efficiency

  • Determines appropriate staffing levels, interviews, hires and oversees training and development of Leadership team, Quality Assurance and administrative staff

  • Create development plans for direct reports and provide training and developmental opportunities to support a Leadership Team succession plan

  • Provide frequent and regularly scheduled coaching, feedback and performance evaluations to direct reports to insure their performance is in alignment with Department and Company goals and performance measurements are being met.

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with operating standards and processes that support customer and regulatory requirements in the most effective and efficient manner. Recommend changes as appropriate.

  • Reviews reports on capacity and costs of each department and communicates with all departments to fill capacity and improve profitability

  • Oversees and approves the creation of revenue, expense and capital budgets

  • Works with Quality Assurance and Client Services to investigate, correct and prevent client and data quality issues.

  • Monitors and researches industry and marketplace trends and uses information to make strategic decisions that increase STLs competitive position

  • Develops and implements operational systems to ensure cost effective execution on all business needs

  • Leads project teams by creating effective project plans and effectively executes on plans including meeting all deadlines.

  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge and understanding in the following areas

    • Laboratory methods, technology, capabilities and capacity

    • Laboratory Accreditation and Quality Assurance

    • Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical Instrumentation and supporting equipment

    • Regulatory Programs relevant to analyses performed in each department

    • Client specific needs and expectations

    • Application and interpretation of results generated by the laboratory

    • Advanced operation of LIMS and other computer systems

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least 3 years of leadership experience

  • Ability to strategically build and lead teams to drive key metrics and performance

  • Ability to use recognition and corrective actions to drive performance

  • Ability to improve processes across multiple teams or departments

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other windows software

  • Ability to work outside of scheduled hours as required to meet client / workload needs. Including the ability to work from home during inclement weather.

  • Enjoys working in a team environment, but can also function independently.

  • Great prioritization, organizational and multi-tasking skills. Be able to manage several concurrent projects and work under pressure.

  • Superior written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Have strong interpersonal skills with an outgoing personality and a good sense of humor.

  • Hard working, tenacious, and demonstrate excitement and enthusiasm around exceeding goals and delivering great customer service.
